Central Catholic sophomore guard, Tyler Nelson received local MVP honors at the 2012 Spalding Hoophall Classic, held at Springfield College this past week.
Nelson led his Raiders with 19 points and seven rebounds as the state’s No. 1 team escaped win a narrow 72-66 win over Springfield Cathedral Thursday night.
The 6-foot sharpshooter connected on five 3-pointers including a crucial trey with 1:37 to seal the game.
Nelson is considered one of the top sophomores in Massachusetts, but does not appear to play like one.
He has a maturity about him that can be seen in his decision making. Rarely in Thursday’s win over Cathedral, did he looked rush or out of control. Central Catholic head coach Rick Nault raves about how smart his sophomore guard is with the ball in his hands.
He has a great shooting touch and is a great catch-and-shoot player.
Nelson has a high ceiling for potential and is should be a player talked about over the next two seasons.
Nelson has had a brilliant 2011-2012 campaign so far, also taking home MVP honors at the Greater Lawrence Boys Christmas Tournament back in late December.
