Jack O’Brien couldn’t do it. Steve Cassidy came close, but no cigar. Edson Cardoso failed on his first try. What all three have in common is that they were Charlestown coaches who lost to Central Catholic in the Division 1 North sectional tournament.
Well, Cardoso got a second crack Thursday night and the Townies broke through, defeating Central Catholic, 54-47, to advance to Saturday’s final against Lexington. The Townies broke open a close game in the fourth quarter, going on a 12-0 run to erase a 41-39 deficit.
“Coach told us all about the history and that this was going to be the big game,” said Charlestown point guard Rony Fernandez, who was solid with 12 points and seven rebounds. “I just didn’t want this to be my last game.”
