WORCESTER -- After sitting out the fall with a back injury, Beaver Country Day guard Jeff Spellman got on the court in the team's opener against Bancroft on Monday night. Buoyed by a good night from Jacquil Taylor, Beaver won their opener 70-34.
Taylor was a bit in the spotlight on Monday with Providence Associate Head Coach Andre LaFluer in attendance to watch the young man play. He showcased some smooth moves around the basket and a few thunderous dunks on the offensive end while challenging nearly every shot on defense.
Spellman looked good in warmups, getting up around the rim on all of his layup attempts, but looked less than 100 percent in the game. He still made a bunch of pin-point passes and hit a three in the corner off an inbounds play to get his feet wet again.
Jherson Colon, a senior for Beaver, scored the game's first ten points of four shots when he connected on two three-pointers and a pair of layups to push BCDS out to the early lead.
Coach Juan Figueroa did a good job of spelling his high-profile players, never having more than two on the court at any point in the later three quarters of the game. They should once again be one of the top teams in Class B and will likely win another EIL title in 2012-13.
