Happy New Years world! Hope you all have been enjoying the holidays. I sure did.
After all it is my last holiday with my family before heading to USC so I got the chance to spend a lot of time with my family and loved ones this month of December. Also my last high school basketball season got underway Dec. 14th in the Doc Hurley Classic in Hartford, Conn. We lost to a good Career Magnet school team 72-62.
It was a good test for my teammates and I though after being ranked a top-5 team in the state of Connecticut and all. But we let it humble us and we haven't lost since. It's been an efficient season for me so far. I've been leading vocally and by style of play for the first time in my life if you ask me. As of late I've seemed unaggressive in games and too passive because I'm worried about my teammates instead of just playing basketball. I never actually thought I'd become an actual point guard.
A lot of people probably would agree but, I see myself becoming more and more of a point guard and less and less of an undersize two guard each game. I've been watching film and thinking about my style of play so far and I will make a few changes in my approach to the game. I feel like I train too hard to go into a game where I'm targeted and be too passive or unaggressive. So I'm looking forward to being more aggressive and just playing how I'm suppose to play instead of how I have to play. I feel like it'll take a lot of pressure off of my teammates, give us a greater opportunity to win ball games, and I'll be able to set up my teammates with better looks at the basket and opportunities to score if i am always in attack mode.
But I know it'll come. I'm just writing music, making people's day, keeping people's faith in God, spending time laughing with my family and teammates, learning from film and SC games I've been watching online (I group message with all of the coaches on the coaching staff after every game and tell them what I think, what I liked, and that I love them). Praying, meeting new people at SC, leading my teammates, and enjoying my last year of high school with my coaches, teachers, and classmates all just to buy time so that I'm not thinking about when he's going to answer that prayer.
After all, patience is a virtue.
I'm just glad I have it, glad I have the work ethic I have, glad I'm in the position I'm in, and glad I've finally figured out this leadership role. Now it's just time to go out there on the basketball court and play how I'm suppose to play.
I wouldn't be here with out you guys!
Thank you all, for reading my fourth blog post for NEHoopNews.
I'll get back to you guys in January!
Hopefully I have good news to tell you guys about God's answer to my prayer.
January will host two huge games: Hoophall Classic on Jan. 19, BABC Holiday Classic on Jan. 21.
Lets see what God does. I know it's coming. I love you all and fight on, forever!
Til then,
Kahlil Dukes
