  • Maine AAU boys teams prepare for Nationals - Some of Eastern Maine’s top schoolboy basketball players will be testing their skills at the national level this summer after contributing to AAU Division I state championship squads. Among the teams that will represent the state at the nationals are the MBR 17-and-under team and the MBR 16-and-under squad, both coached by Carl Parker of Bangor; and the Penobscot Pirates, a 15-and-under squad coached by Norman Poirier and Jean L’Italien. The MBR 17-U squad is led by Bangor Daily News first-team All-Maine choice Keegan Hyland, a guard who just completed his junior year at South Portland and is drawing considerable attention from Division I college programs. He is joined by BDN All-Maine second-teamers Indiana Faithfull, a guard from Cheverus of Portland, and 6-foot-6 forward Dominic Borelli of Westbrook. Both will be seniors in the fall. Others on the squad include Colton Gross of Hermon, Jacob Moore of Hampden Academy, Stefano Mancini of Falmouth, Trevor Tierney of Greely of Cumberland Center and Yusef Iman, Bo Leary and James Philbrook, all of Edward Little of Auburn. - Read full article from Bangor Daily News
  • Deering´s (ME) Manduca, Cheverus´ DiStasio finalists for awards - Southern Maine players Mick DiStasio of Cheverus, Diana Manduca of Deering and Sloane Sorrell of Noble are finalists for the top awards in Maine high school basketball tonight. DiStasio is a candidate for Mr. Basketball while Manduca and Sorrell are up for the Miss Basketball award. Gordon Fischer of Camden Hills and Thomas Knight of Dirigo are the other finalists for Mr. Basketball. Morgan Frame of Waterville is the third finalist for Miss Basketball. The award is given annually to the state´s top high school senior. - Read full article from Portland Press Herald
  • Maine Basketball: Two weeks to the finals and it all starts today - Everything is in place. Now the fun begins. Maine's cure for the midwinter doldrums starts today in Portland, Augusta and Bangor with the opening of the high school boys' and girls' basketball quarterfinals. Fans from all over the state will crowd into arenas to watch their teams. - Read full article from Portland Press Herald
  • Tigers tame Storm for chance at Stags (Me.) - Robin Wilson had a game-high 20 points with 11 rebounds Tuesday night to lead Biddeford to a 55-38 victory over Scarborough in a Western Class A boys' basketball prelim. The eighth-seeded Tigers (11-8) advanced to a quarterfinal against top-ranked Cheverus (18-0) at 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Portland Expo. - Read full article from Portland Press Herald
  • Stags' go to guy - Mick DiStasio of Cheverus flicked the ball to the basket in shooting drills before a game last week. Nearly all of his shots either swished or bounced on the rim before dropping through the hoop. Did that mean DiStasio would have a big game? "Some players feel that if they're hot in warm-ups, it's going to carry over to the game," said DiStasio, the top scorer for the top-ranked and undefeated Stags. "Others feel that if they're missing some shots, it has to turn around during the game." - Read full article from Portland Press Herald
  • Tourney time is here (in Maine) - BOYS' CLASS A 1. Cheverus (18-0) 2. Westbrook (16-2) 3. South Portland (14-4) - Read full article from Portland Press Herald
  • Still Unbeaten, those Stags (Me.) - Cheverus High basketball coach Bob Brown has been wanting a team to push his unbeaten Stags. He got what he wanted Friday night. South Portland hung around for nearly three quarters before Cheverus pulled away for a 52-39 victory at a packed Beal Gymnasium. "I thought we played poor offense and they played good defense until the middle of the third quarter," Brown said. - Read full article from Portland Press Herald
  • Bounce toward perfection (ME) - Entering with the same 14-0 record it had last year in this game, Cheverus made sure it didn't stumble this time. The Stags got their offense untracked in the second half to pull away from Thornton Academy for a 57-48 boys' basketball win Tuesday night. A year ago, Thornton traveled to Cheverus and knocked it from the unbeaten ranks. That was the first of three straight losses for Cheverus, which didn't lose after that and won the Class A state title. - Read full article from Portland Press Herald
  • A Delightful Defense - Cheverus used its best-in-the-league defense to hold Keegan Hyland, the league's top scorer, to his second-lowest point total of the season, and rode a 14-point run to start the third quarter to a 60-41 victory against South Portland in a Southern Maine Activities Association boys' basketball game Friday night at a packed Keegan Gymnasium. It was the second time this week that Cheverus (13-0) knocked off the No. 1 seed in the Heal point standings. Now the Stags could move into the top spot after also beating Westbrook, which was No. 1 the previous week. - Read full article from Portland Press Herald
  • Stags Run True to Form Again - Cheverus didn't waste any time establishing its superiority over Westbrook in their Western Maine Class A schoolboy basketball showdown. As the Stags' leading scorer Mick DiStasio said: "We like to get off to a quick start. When we do, we're tough to beat." - Read full article from Maine Press Herald
